PEI Faculty Seminar Series: Truths We Must Tell Ourselves to Manage Climate Chan
Rob Socolow, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Emeritus, will present, “Truths We Must Tell Ourselves to Manage Climate Change,” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Guyot Hall, Room 10. Lunch will be served at noon in the Guyot Atrium. Socolow is the first speaker in the Spring 2018 PEI Faculty Seminar Series.
The extraordinary progress of renewable energy tempts the declaration of “Mission Accomplished!” Whoa! We’ve yet to address coal-based industrialization in developing countries, the intermittency of wind and solar power, uncertainties regarding severe climate change, and the validity of geoengineering. A new academic domain, Destiny Studies, explores humanity’s collective future and asks what accomplishing the “mission” requires.
