PEI Faculty Seminar Series: Lane on politics and nature in the ancient world
Melissa Lane, the Class of 1943 Professor of Politics and Director of the University Center for Human Values, will explore how politics shaped human involvement with nature in the ancient world in her lecture, “Ancient Greek and Hebrew Ideas of Ecological Politics,” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Guyot Hall, Room 10. Lunch will be served at noon in the Guyot Atrium. Lane, who is PEI associated faculty, is the final speaker in the Fall 2017 PEI Faculty Seminar Series.

Lane will explore how politics — in historical reality, in political theory and in philosophical imagery — mediated between ecology and theology in the ancient world, and how they shaped human involvement with nature. In ancient thought, politics were a deliberate and integral step toward understanding and addressing environmental and ecological issues.
